November 11, 1922 - January 23, 2015
George J. Grau, 92, a native of Tullahoma, Tenn. and longtime resident of Gulf Shores, departed Friday, Jan. 23, 2015.
He was a graduate of Middle Tennessee State University, having attended on a football scholarship. He also was a B-17 pilot during WWII as a member of the 457th Bomb Group of the 8th Air Force. He was awarded the Purple Heart. He left the service as a captain.
He was the 2008 Alabama Veteran of the Year.
He was known in his community for bringing WWII air shows and veteran groups to Gulf Shores. He often educated elementary and middle school students about the history of the 8th Air Force during WWII.
He was a retired real estate broker.
He is survived by his two sons, Tucker Grau of Gulf Shores and Joseph Grau of Columbus, Ga.; two grandchildren, Jared Grau of San Antonio, Texas and Jordan Grau of Auburn.
He joins his beloved wife, Peggy Grau into eternity.
Visitation will be held at St. Andrews by the Sea in Gulf Shores on Wednesday, Jan. 28, 2015, from noon until 2 p.m., with funeral services starting at 2 p.m. and interment following the service in Miller Memorial Cemetery off Fort Morgan Road in Gulf Shores.
